Site location

Silverton Wind Farm is located in the Barrier Ranges of NSW, with its south-western boundary approximately five kilometres north of Silverton and approximately 25 kilometres north-west of Broken Hill. The placement of turbines would be concentrated over the Mundi Mundi Range in the southern portion of the site and Mount Robe Range in the northern portion of the site.

The nearest major town is Broken Hill, located approximately 25 kilometres south east of the turbine site. Broken Hill was historically a mining town. The economic significance of mining to the area decreased in the later part of the 20th Century. Broken Hill’s major industry now is tourism, although the legacy of mining continues to be a major attraction that drives the tourism industry.

In addition to the wind turbines, the proposal includes a substantial investment in the electricity transmission capacity of NSW.

The first stage of the Silverton Wind Farm proposal includes the construction of a 25km transmission power line that will link the electricity generated by Silverton Wind Farm directly to the Transgrid substation at Broken Hill.

The second stage of the Silverton Wind Farm proposal include the construction of a transmission line from site via Broken Hill to the Red Cliffs substation in Victoria, a distance of approximately 300 kilometres. This second stage would also provide a new backup supply capacity for Broken Hill, which is currently supplied by a single transmission line.
